The Meaning
Let me meditate on famous Goddess Kali who keeps a ferocious
face against evils, uncombed hair, four handed lady, garlanded of skull on Her
neck, Her left upper hand has a dagger, lower left hand has a severed head of
an demon, right upper and lower hands showing Her promise of protection and
blessings to all devotees. She holds a complexion of very dark cloud, almost
naked appearance, some areas of Her body is stained with evils’ blood, She keeps
skulls as Her ear rings, showing her power against evils with a fearful look,
slightly opened mouth with elevated blood stained upper lip and elevated upper
teeth, she has a skirt of transacted demons hands as part of her covering in
Her waist line, with expression of anger in face against devils, who also keeps
her Presence in the place of our cremation. Her forehead keep a brightness like a morning Sun, Her long
hair extends down to her knees, she is standing with Her one feet on Lord
Shiva’s chest and She is surrounded by a large group screaming jackals. I meditate on her, who is the consort
of Lord Shiva, who keeps a smiley face and hold the power of fulfilment of
desires of sincere devotees.
About Mother Kali
Like
in any other myths we have a very wrong conception about Goddess Kali, many of
us don’t know the real stories or facts about Mother Kali. The reasons are very
simple; all these scriptures are in Devnagari which is almost a dying language
in India. As a result we are deprived from many facts which are not only
amazing but help in gathering true knowledge. Same thing is about Mother Kali,
if we don’t go through the real fact about Mother Kali we may misinterpret Her
iconography.
Like all the other forms of Devi, She is the
most kind-hearted because She provides moksha or liberation to Her children. She is
the matching part of Shiva. They are the destroyers of unreality. Attached with
ego if we visualize Mother She will appear in a frightening form. But with mature soul and with spiritual practice to
remove the illusion of the ego we will find Mother Kali as very charming,
affectionate, and full of love and care for Her children.
Many misinterprets Kali is a goddess of death but as far as my knowledge I didn’t find anywhere about that. Neither She found killing anything but demons nor is She associated specifically with the process of human dying. May be this misconception arises due to that both Kali and Shiva are said to inhabit cremation grounds and devotees often go to these places to meditate. But the actual fact is to overcome the self-egoism by reinforcing the awareness that our body is a purely a temporary condition. Shiva and Kali are said to inhabit these places because, our attachment to the body develops that sense of ego. Shiva and Kali grant liberation by removing that illusion of the ego. Thus we are the eternal,.and not the mere body. The scene of the cremation grounds helps us to overcome such illusion.
The term Kali comes from the root Sanskrit word "kal" which means time. Kali is so called because She devours Kal (time) and then resumes Her own dark formlessness. She is the embodiment of three gunas (qualities of nature) She creates with Her sattva guna(quality of goodness and purity), preserves with rajas (passion and activity), and destroys with tamas (ignorance and inertia).
Her body colour is deep blue, like the sky. As the sky is limitless, and from a distance one sees the sky as blue, but in reality it is colourless and transparent when observed from close, so also Mother Kali.
Crescent above Her forehead symbolizes She is the giver of liberation to the mankind.
Images of two corps of two little babies hang from Her ears as ear-rings; this means that She favours childlike, dispassionate, immutable devotees.
Smiling face of Mother symbolizes She is ever-blissful.
Mother Kali's white teeth symbolizes sattva or serenity; Her red tongue, rajas, or activity; and Her drunkenness: tamas or inertia. The meaning is that tamas can be conquered by rajas, and rajas can be conquered by sattva.
As soon as a child born, it takes mother’s milk for survival similarly the full breast of Mother symbolizes that She provides the nourishment to all beings.
The Terrible form mother indicates that She is the mother of the universe as well as the destroyer. When a mother spanks her child, it does not mean that she is cruel; She disciplines her child for its own good. A real child or devotee will not get scare by the terrible form of mother.
The necklace of Mother consists of fifty skulls, that represent the fifty letters of the Sanskrit alphabet, the origin of sound. She is the Shabda Brahman, or Logos-the source of creation.
The upper right arm of Mother grants fearlessness, and the lower right arm offers boons. She protects Her devotees from danger, and She fulfils their desires. She holds a sword with the upper left arm and a severed head with the lower. She can cut human bondage with the sword of knowledge; She imparts wisdom to the head, the receptacle of supreme wisdom.
Mother is termed as digambari, "clad in space." She is infinite, so no finite dress can cover Her body.
Mother Kali's waist is encircled with a girdle of severed human arms that represent action. All human actions and their results go to the Divine Mother. At the end of a cycle all souls unite with Kali; during creation they again progress with their individual karmas.
Shiva and Shakti are always bonded together. He is the changeless aspect of the Supreme, and She the apparently changing aspect of the same. Shiva is pure cosmic consciousness, and Kali is cosmic energy. No creation is possible without their union. Siva cannot manifest without the power of Kali, and Kali cannot function without the consciousness of Shiva.
If Her right foot is forward, She is termed as Dakshina Kali (benign form); and when Her left foot is forward, Vama Kali (terrible form). The two feet also symbolizes that by one foot She controls the past and with other She controls the future of Her Devotees.
